Spread The Love

I have been staring at a blank New Post screen every day for over a week now. Forgive me, fellow bloggers, for my absence. I know I’ve said this before, but this time, it’s different. It’s not solely because life has been crazy busy, which it has, but I’ve always been able to schedule in some well needed blogging time. This time, I’ve just been at a loss for words. The shootings of Alton Sterling, Philando Castile and the five Dallas officers reduced me to silence. I haven’t even attempted to watch the supporting videos, I know it’s cowardly, especially given the fact that the loved ones of those who were murdered are the ones who must bear the burden at the end of the day.

To be honest, I so badly wanted to respond to these incidents as soon as they occurred, but I didn’t know where to begin. I didn’t know what I could possibly add to the discussion that would do any good. I would offer my condolences, a word on gun laws and the stupidity of racism, but it all felt so empty to me. I turned away from social media altogether, including Word Press, which usually provides me a happy escape. Seeing our neighbours to the south in such a state of civil unrest pains me. When people lose trust in those who are supposed to protect and serve their nation, things turn really nasty, really fast. It’s no secret that cops fatally killing innocent black Americans has become an epidemic. And the retaliation on innocent cops as a reaction to these murders is equally troubling. I use the word epidemic because it truly is. People are angry, scared, helpless and fighting for their lives. I can’t even begin to imagine what it must feel like to be a black American right now. A broken taillight or playing with a toy gun can turn into a fatal life sentence. The problem is racism. The problem is the lack of gun control. The problem is hate. The problem is ignorance.

I’ve been thinking of the problems hate breeds. It divides us all. We will live in fear of one another. These problems need to be addressed with solutions, with action. Love speaks louder than hate, so I’ve thought of an achievable plan for all of us:

Spread the love once a day, in some way.

I am challenging myself, and YOU, to begin actively spreading positivity and love to those who need it or deserve it.

Say hello or smile at passersby on the street to brighten someones day.

Pack an extra lunch and give it to someone who would go hungry otherwise.

Donate clothes and useful items to a local shelter rather than just tossing them.

Hold the door open for someone, or offer a helping hand to someone in need.

Whatever it is you do to make this world a better place, no matter how small it seems, it does matter. Positive action should cause a positive reaction. And while I’m afraid I can’t provide a solution to the bigger issues at hand here, what I can do is love louder, be more positive, and share that energy with those around me. Here is what I hope to do:

  1. Do a good deed once a day, big or small actions.
  2. Focus on the positives rather than the negatives in ALL aspects of my life.
  3. Spread the love and positive energy to others.
  4. Share the little things I did to spread the love in a weekly blog post.
  5. Hopefully get other wonderful bloggers involved in the spread the love movement.

I’d love to hear what you do, want to do, or have done in the past to spread the love to those who need it. What are your hopes and goals for a brighter future? Either share in the comments or as a pingback to this post, add “SpreadTheLove” to your tags, and as a thank you I will share your blog and your goals to spread the love in my weekly posts!

Let us band together and silence hate.

  1. YES NICOLE! THE WORLD NEEDS EQUALITY. RACISM NEEDS TO END. I’VE BEEN DISCRIMINATED BEFORE,BUT KILLING! WOAH THAT’S JUST SO NEGATIVE. WE ARE BORN WITH LOVE, HATE IS TAUGHT,OR LEARNED.

  2. “Let us band together and silence hate.”

There are a lot, especially on the Left, who resonate with this idea. But I think what they really mean is “Let’s call everything we disagree with ‘hate’ and make sure people who don’t agree with are silenced.”

The road to hell is paved with good intentions (and people who think they are good intentioned).

      1. You might find something I wrote a while back (below) relevant to the idea of “love [speaking] louder than hate.”

        Differences

Racism is inherent in the human condition. Humans are wired to see differences and draw conclusions about the meaning of those differences based on experience. Humans are wired to identify “we” and “them” and differences of sex and color are two big and obvious differences.

There is nothing immoral or inhuman about naturally drawing such conclusions. The mechanisms are largely below the conscious threshold. This is as true of black, yellow, and red children as of white children. All are born natural racists and bigots.

The point of education is to bring the rational mind and the heart into the conversation and help it see the evidence that there is more that unites than divides, to see the humanity in all that underlies the differences. There is nothing inherently awful about starting out life as a racist and a bigot. It is the human condition. The tragedy is is not in how we start, but in how we end.

      2. You have a way with words. I like that last line- Tragedy is not in how we start, but in how we end.
I will most certainly check out this post! Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

    1. There is a concept in Judeo-Christian thought that love and correction go hand in hand:

For whom the LORD loves He reproves, Even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights. -Proverbs 3:12

As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: … -Rev 3.19

We can’t solve the problems we face with love until we see and fully recognize the real problems. Unfortunately the truth about these problems can be difficult to find. Love is a powerful tool but it has to be focused on truth, not illusion.

      1. I agree- that’s a big reason I found it so difficult to even respond to these tragedies. Pin pointing the route of the problem is so difficult, knowing how to tackle it is near impossible, at least in my mind. The solution to ignorance takes time and generations, resources and tools. The thing I can do, actively and daily, is promote positivity and put love out into the world in any way I can. That’s a start, if more people could do that, at the very least, it would change one person’s day. It may not fix racism and brutality, but it’s an active effort to be better to those around us.

  3. this was a thought provoking post, i have been away from WP for other reasons and yours was the first blog i chose to read to reconnect and seeing this makes me realise firstly what a sensitive soul your are and secondly that even the smallest gesture will help make this world a better place. Just adding my 2 cents…..besides hate i think what needs to change is indifference….in a modern society everyone is so busy chasing their own dreams and happiness its no longer a community feeling but rather living on my own and surviving. I pray this changes so we stop being so self centered and more community oriented…..your suggestion of starting with a smile is a good place to begin. thanks for the thoughts Nicole, very moving.

    1. I’m honoured you came to my blog after having been away. You are so right about indifference. It’s so hard to stay focused on one cause because every day something horrible happens, and we jump from one problem to the next, pushing the previous ones out of our minds. This world needs more happiness, more love and kindness shared. It’s been so lovely reconnecting with you. Welcome back to WP❤

    1. I feel as though it’s not my place to speak on the topic, and I’m so happy to know you find it refreshing. It’s 2016 I cannot believe equality is still an issue, and that people are ignorant enough to still hold racist values.
